The Rustout Issue: Why We Stay in Our Comfort Zone And Tend to Stagnate in Life?

We start off the same way. In the beginning, we’re excited, eager, and energetic. We have dreams we want to pursue. A desire to make something of ourselves, coupled with an earnest intention to overcome any obstacles that come our way. Somewhere along the way through, we hit a wall. We stop learning. We look around and see other people are content with where they are. So we sit and rest for a while in a safe haven until we feel motivated enough to start working on our goals again. We wait. That is until awhile turns into months, then years. One day, you look back and realize that you’ve been stuck in the same spot for the past decade. We decide to stop trying things because where we are is “good enough”. We start to feel comfortable, to the point that anything new is immediately averted. This phenomenon is known as rust out. It happens when we stop challenging ourselves and always opt for the safe route. We simply exist, without reflecting on how we can grow. There’s a feeling of nu...

Why decision making is so difficult for many?

In the last, over five years I have seen many struggles when it comes to making a decision. “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” — Lao Tzu. The first step is never physical. It is entirely mental. The first step is a decision. A decision to commit. A decision to act. If we never make this decision, we will never do. The word decision comes from Latin and it literally means “to cut off”. By making a decision, we effectively cut out all other possibilities. We make them inaccessible. Remove them from the equation. They are no longer open to us. This sudden loss of options, the fear that we might make the wrong decision and choose incorrectly, holds us as a prisoner. Indecision reigns, and in its wake we are left shackled. Unable to move forward, unable to go back. We succumb to analysis paralysis. This is where discontentment appears. Because, like a shark, we humans drown when we’re not moving forward. We drown in discontentment and frustration and melancholy. ...

Learn, Unlearn And Relearn: How To Stay Relevant?

While we’re all born with an intense desire to learn, somewhere along the line many of us lose our passion for learning. Whatever the reasons, once the basics are covered, many of us tend to stick with what we know and avoid situations or challenges where we may mess up or be forced to learn something new, thus creating a safe, secure and comfortable (and confining) world for ourselves. Here, we do our best to mould the changes going on around us—in people, events and the general environment—to fit with our current ‘mental maps.’ We may say we’re open to change but actually do our best to avoid it. For a while, that strategy can work fairly well. What it doesn’t do is prepare us to adapt to a future that may well require an entirely new set of maps. When you resist learning, unlearning and relearning, the options available to you can narrow greatly. When it comes to adapting to change, a delay is increasingly expensive as you quickly lose your place in a world forever marching stead...

What to do when you have decided to change/go for the Second Innings?

In my previous posts have written about the Second Innings , however, this has been something close to my heart as have experienced it myself and have engaged with many in the last five years on this. Recent CII HR conclave attended by me gave me three aspects to mull over & share. I shared my views on Pause to Start in the last post and today will like to revisit on the aspect of Second Innings. Here I will like to add that when talking about change/second Innings, it's not about only Men but Women too who have spent the best part of their life being full-time Housewife's as a career and with kids growing up & responsibilities coming down, they also start looking for a change/second Innings. When you have decided to go for a Change/Second Innings, you have to listen to Your Inner Voice. Stay with your hunch, You probably have an inner hunch as to what would interest you or what you may want to do based on your talents & experience. You’ve got to be disruptive,...
