Do The Right Thing!
This week I read through an excerpt from an Interview taken with Mr. Ratan Tata. I wish to share the excerpt with all - "At 82, I’m still learning, so when you ask me to give a piece of advice, I feel like the ‘right advice’ changes over a period of time — but the one thing that remains unchanged is the desire to do the right thing. So I’ll say this — leave the advice aside and do what is the right thing, even if it isn’t the easiest thing to do." The headline of this article and excerpt from the above Interview has been the subject of a lot of our recent successes. Looking back, I believe what we did right was that we did whatever we felt was the right thing to do at that point of time, was always not easy to do and it has helped us make our decision-making process so much easier now.
Over the last few years of my Startup Journey I realized that when we were committed to “doing the right thing”, it allowed for authenticity and transparency. It also generated a lot of goodwill for us. When we were genuinely trying to do things for the right reason, people noticed us and they were more forgiving if and when we made a mistake or when something went wrong. I believe doing the right thing doesn’t always have to be altruistic. For me, it just means delivering on our promises. That can mean serving the community or it can mean serving our customers. Believe me, it is not always easy to do the right thing. At times it can be hard to know what the right thing even is.
The truth is that what our life becomes is a direct result of all the stressed-out, painful, short-term decisions we make each and every day. Each decision contributes to the results that we will realize one day, we are creating our future. However, doing the right thing always is tough many times. But I strongly believe that its a lot easier than living in a world of misery and pain we may have created with poor choices and short-sighted decisions. I think it’s important to just do the right thing always as It feels good, it brings us closer to others and it transforms our life. It might seem simple, but it makes all the difference.
