Over Communicate !
The biggest lesson I’ve learned as Co-Founder of a Startup is the art of over-communicating. I’m constantly repeating the Problem we are trying to solve to all the stakeholders. When I thought I couldn’t over-communicate anymore, I would reiterate the Solution again. I noticed a funny thing begin to happen. People started to understand what and more importantly why we were doing things. The message was trickling with all the stakeholders. People would repeat to each other what I was repeating to them. I have seen in the absence of information, most people fill in the blanks, make up their own story … and usually add negative assumptions. I believe no amount of over-communication is too much when alignment is at stake.
“Over-communicate. It’s better to tell someone something they already know than to not tell them something they needed to hear.” ~ Alex Irvine. In the context of the ongoing crisis where in-person meetings are almost not happening, people having limited attention span and many do not listen well, in such a world, we all need to over-communicate — not just communicate. We all have been working remotely from the home for some time now, I myself have been communicating more often than I normally would, and far more often than I think I would. Because I believe constant over-communication helps me diminish surprises, clear out roadblocks, helps me cope with bad news, and also celebrate wins.
The ongoing crisis has not only transformed the way we live and work but also the way we communicate. In these times, over-communicating and simplifying the communication using various means by empathizing with the people and giving them factual information with emotion is the key. I think Over-communication is at the heart of good business & life as it helps prevent any misunderstandings, keeps key information top of mind, and makes sure everyone is on the same page. I believe, Now is a great time to over-communicate about the future, in which, after we survive, we're confident we'll thrive. Just remember: Keep Everyone in the know and on track by over-communicating openly, frequently, and clearly.
Happy Sunday!! Keep Moving & Smiling!!🏃🏽😊
