It’s OK to Make Mistakes!

This week while doing the induction of our senior colleague who has joined us recently, I was sharing with her the culture of our Startup Jeevitam. I shared with her that mistakes, gaffes, faux pas, and failed attempts have been part of our Startup Journey, it has been part of the exploration and fine-tuning of our products and services. Without them, we won't have known the limits and possibilities of what we can do. We strongly believe that by giving ourselves and others permission to make mistakes, we actually create an environment within our own being and within our key relationships and teams, that is conducive to trust, connection, risk-taking, forgiveness, creativity, and genuine success. While for Startups like us it can seem a little risky, and even counter-intuitive, however, we have experienced allowing more freedom for mistakes to be made, creating the conditions for fewer errors to occur, and more fun and productivity to take place. It's OK to Make a Mistake, however, we try as much not to repeat the same mistake, instead Making a New One.

"Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new." ~ Albert Einstein. While mistakes aren’t a huge issue in our life, we actually spend and waste a lot of time worrying about making mistakes, and also find ourselves being unnecessarily critical of those around us when they make mistakes. "I made a mistake." Those are four words nobody ever wants to have to admit. Truth be told, everyone makes mistakes. It’s a part of the learning process of life. Everybody does, although no one admits it. I have made enough and seen enough to know that it is a regular occurrence for everyone, and it’s nothing to be embarrassed or ashamed about. We all like to strive for perfection and hate to disappoint people, but in reality, we all make mistakes. We replay everything in our heads and try to figure out where we went wrong. In the end, we have to live with what we did. If we are lucky enough, the mistake can be fixed. I believe realizing that it is OK to make mistakes in work and life is the key to helping us live a happier life.

“Learn from the mistakes of others. You can’t live long enough to make them all yourself.” ~ Eleanor Roosevelt. Some people learn from mistakes; others don’t. That said, some mistakes could be avoided in the first place if people learned from the mistakes of others. Lessons in life will be repeated until they are learned. Why learn solely from our mistakes when we can learn from the mistakes of others? In fact, we learn from our mistakes, but it turns out that we could learn more from others’ mistakes. However, Learning from Others' mistakes requires a different approach than focusing inward. I personally read a lot and ask my mentors, to learn valuable lessons from others to avoid making mistakes. We don't believe in reinventing the wheel, before we begin anything new, we do check whether it’s been done before, and apply lessons learned to avoid mistakes. Lastly, We try as much not to blame someone for the Mistake, however, look into the reasons for the mistake and institutionalize the process so that mistakes are not repeated. It's OK to Make a New Mistake.
