Keep Moving the Needle!
When we try solving the Big Problem, it often feels futile to try. Because if we try and we don't succeed, it seems like a wasted effort. But it's not, I strongly believe sometimes moving the Needle is Enough. I keep telling my Team that in our Startup Jeevitam we are trying to solve the Big Problem of helping Vulnerable Segments find Sustainable Livelihood. We are on a Mission for Livelihood for All. To accomplish this audacious goal, we need to change the way Work Seekers and Work Providers find each other. Not an easy feat gave the size of the Problem and the fact that People in the Industry are used to doing things in a certain way. As we consider the hugeness of our goal, one of my colleagues this week asked, "Is it realistic to think we're going to change the way Vulnerable Segments find Sustainable Livelihood?" My answer was, "No, we're not going to change everything". What we are going to do is Move the Needle. The more we Move the Needle, the more we'll get traction, then there will be more energy, then more people will emerge to help us, and so on. We don't accomplish big things overnight; We have to move the needle every day in Life & Business.
The phrase 'Keep Moving the Needle' means that it is enough to register or make a difference to the user- enough for the user to take note of, to have enough of an effect that people notice a change. For me Moving the needle refers to doing a few things every day that truly matter. Maybe that's sitting down to have that tough conversation; making calls to or meeting the people who matter; sending messages to everyone to move with the tasks/work assigned to them. They’re always tasks, projects, and opportunities that will move our business, our career, or us personally forward - the things that matter. It's drilling in on those precious few things that will make all the difference. When we Move the Needle we experience the momentum to move ever closer to a goal. Every day in the early morning I sit down and make a complete list of things that will Move the Needle – the things I feel are relevant, the things that connect the dots, the things that matter. Then, on the top of my Plan of the Day on my Mobile, type ‘MTN’ (Move the Needle). Then, go back to that original list and select two of three of THE most important things I have to do TODAY to Move the Needle. And, then, go do them. I do this every morning, every single day to Keep the Needle Moving.
I am often asked this question Can Moving the Needle every day help us achieve the Audacious Goals that we set for ourselves as an organization or as an Individual? I keep saying at some point, we will admit that our organization or our lives were transformed by these small changes we made every day by Keeping the Needle Moving. In the beginning, these small changes can often seem meaningless because they get washed away by the weight of the system. Gradually, though, as we continue to layer small changes on top of one another, the scales of life start to move. Each change is like adding a grain of sand to the positive side of the scale, slowly tilting things in our favor. Eventually, if we stick with it, we hit a tipping point. This is a continuous process. There is no finish line. There is no permanent solution. We have to always keep looking for the next way to Keep Moving the Needle. The secret to getting results that last is to never stop Moving the Needle. It’s remarkable what we can build if we just don’t stop. The changes we bring in by Keep Moving the Needle don’t add up. They compound. Small changes. Remarkable results. That’s the power of Keep Moving the Needle.
