Always Have a Plan B!
Today I went through a video posted by Jaspreet Bindra on LinkedIn wherein he shared five reasons, why growing up in India helped Indian-Origin Executives to rise to the very top of Big Tech. One of the reasons he shared was that of circumstances in India pushing Indians to get trained, to Always Have a Plan B. What it essentially means is that many times things will not go as per the plan (which in India happens occassionally), in that case we should always have a alternate plan of action, which is the Plan B. I once saw a quote that goes like this: 'Life is like a biscuit - it never breaks in the direction which we wish it to break.' Life does not always go according to our best laid plans, and many a time the twist and turns of life are very unpredictable, resulting in our plan A not materialize according to our desires. That is why I believe everyone in their Business & Life should always have a contingency plan, i.e. a plan B. The plan B is what will be done if for reasons Plan A does not happen.
I have experienced, to succeed in life we all need to try. Trying may not get us anywhere initially, but if we keep at it, we keep trying in all aspects of our life, it will make us succeed in ways we never imagined possible. My Elder daughter after becoming a lawyer, kept working with various work opportunities coming her way, till she finally got what she liked doing. If we adapt quickly to ever changing situations, our ability to achieve our goals jump manifold. It’s no secret that it takes work to come up with one plan. It takes extra work to come up with two.I think we have ourselves to decide what kind of person we want to be, One who only comes up with one plan or the person who has multiple plans in back pocket ready to go? I personally believe that if I have multiple backup plans in place, it’s easier for me to to go to the Plan B, rather than figuring it out inspite of best efforts & focus, Plan A does not work. Having a backup plan is crucial to our success in Life.
In our Startup Jeevitam, we launched Audacious Project on 2nd October to help as many Girls/Women find Sustainable Livelihood. We are calling this Project Aarambh. Lot of planning went for almost over two months before the launch, wherein we are working with multiple stakeholders to make this Initiative a Movement. I keep telling my Colleagues & Partners that inspite of our best laid down plans, things will not work as per the plan many times, for reasons which are beyond our control. Besides, when we are trying to do something which has not been done ever, something of this scale & magnitude, many assumptions made by us while planning may not play out as we had anticipated. In such scenarios, we should always be having back up plans in place (which we do have) and our plans have to keep evolving, till the time we achieve the desired stated objectives. Success in Life & Business is not how well we execute Plan A, it's how successfully we cope up with Plan B. If our Plans are not working, we need to adjust our Plans. Never Give Up.
