Work & Live Anywhere in the Year 2023!
This week I was in Mumbai to onboard one of our Senior Colleagues who has joined Jeevitam. There were a few pointers for me that gave me some insights into how people would like to Work and Live in 2023. First, Most to whom I spoke and asked whether they were happy spending two to four hours every day commuting to the office, the answer was obvious Big No. Second, as I was entering the headquarters of one of the Private sector Banks for a visit around 9.30 am, what I saw was a sea of humanity clamoring to reach the office on time. And most of them were not looking excited to come to the office and when asked, they were looking at flexibility and choice to be given to them. I keep saying that the biggest Innovation which happened since the onset of the ongoing crisis is Working from Home/Anywhere ie Remote Working. Lockdowns forced all the Corporates/Startups/Government Bodies to allow their employees to Work from Home and it's now an acceptable Way of Working across India & World. As I see, there is a silent revolution happening, this time from the worker's side, wherein they are gravitating towards opportunities that give them the choice to Live & Work from Anywhere.
“There are two kinds of companies: One is going to embrace work from anywhere, and the second is in denial—I feel those companies will lose their workforce” ~ Prithwiraj Choudhury. I keep asking many business heads about the impact of allowing their workforce to work remotely during the lockdowns, most who adapted themselves & changed had seen their business grow, save in costs, improved productivity, etc. However, it continues to baffle me as to why they were insisting on going back to the old ways of working, and they do not have any clear answers. I keep saying World is now one Marketplace. We earlier used to Live Where We Worked & We now Wish to Work Where We Live. The Big resignation drama followed by the Big termination drama tells us about the fight which is happening between the Two worlds. We all are going through a Transition. I personally believe Remote Working removes the inherent unfairness of the geographical birth lottery to a great extent and gives All of us a Fair & Equal Opportunity to Work & Live Anywhere.
New Work Profiles as Digital Nomads are emerging allowing Individuals to travel across the world and Work from Anywhere, many countries are now offering Digital Nomad Visas. Similarly, many platforms are emerging helping Corporates/Startups to hire talent from across the world, offering flexibility to work from Anywhere, and reposing trust in their workforce. The ongoing crisis has catalyzed a monumental shift in where and how people work. In our Startup Jeevitam, we are seeing Remote Working as a Big opportunity for the Aspirational Segments to find Sustainable Livelihood. For example, the Workforce Participation of Women & Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) in India is abysmally low. Remote Working is a big and equal opportunity for Women & PwDs to Work from the comforts of their home. Also, Remote Working is allowing all of us to stay with our Family & Friends in our hometown improving our lifestyle, without being forced to migrate to bigger cities. It's also saving long hours spent commuting, thus helping increase productivity. I believe in the Year 2023 Remote Working will get more evolved, giving us all a Fair & Big opportunity to design our own lives and also offer Flexibility to Work & Live from Anywhere.
