Value of Life is measured by Lives it Touches!
This week I read this story shared in one of the WhatsApp Groups about a farmer who grew excellent-quality corn. Every year he won the award for the best-grown corn. One year a newspaper reporter interviewed him and learned something interesting about how he grew it. The reporter discovered that the farmer shared his seed corn with his neighbors. “How can you afford to share your best seed corn with your neighbors when they are entering corn in competition with yours each year?” the reporter asked. “Why sir,” said the farmer, “Didn’t you know? The wind picks up pollen from the ripening corn and swirls it from field to field. If my neighbors grow inferior corn, cross-pollination will steadily degrade the quality of my corn. If I am to grow good corn, I must help my neighbors grow good corn.” So is with our lives... Those who want to live meaningfully and well must help enrich the lives of others, for the value of a life is measured by the lives it touches. True fulfillment and happiness come not just from personal success, but also from making a positive impact on the world around us.
From a corporate point of view, the phrase "value of life is measured by lives it touches" can be interpreted to mean that the success and worth of a company are not just measured by its financial performance or market share, but also by the positive impact it has on its employees, customers, stakeholders, and the wider community. This week I visited the Headquarters of Patanjali in Haridwar. I had the opportunity to interact with Patients coming from across India for diseases that possibly had no cure and getting cured. I met the employees, who were from neighbouring areas, working hard to treat the patients and also earn their livelihood. I saw hundreds of people doing Yoga together and creating one of the largest communities of Yoga practitioners in the world. I met the management, who were committed to delivering service and value to the last mile. Indeed a Corporate or a Startup that prioritizes social responsibility, sustainability and impact, creates long-term success.
The value of life can be measured in many different ways, and from a personal perspective, one valid way to measure its value is by the number of lives it touches. This can include the impact that one's actions, words, and choices have on others, as well as the relationships that one forms and the connections that one makes throughout their life. Consider the example of a teacher. My wife is a teacher and I know a good teacher can touch the lives of many many students over the course of their career. They can inspire, encourage, and challenge their students to achieve their full potential. And those students, in turn, can go on to touch the lives of others in their own ways, passing on the lessons and values they learned from their teacher. I have seen even in small, everyday interactions, we have the opportunity to touch the lives of others in positive ways. A smile, a kind word, or a small act of generosity can make a big difference in someone's day. And those small acts of kindness can ripple out, touching the lives of others in ways we may never even know. Ultimately, I believe the value of life is not something that can be measured objectively or quantitatively. It is a deeply personal and subjective matter, shaped by our own experiences, values, and beliefs. But if we consider the lives we touch as one measure of our own value, we can strive to live lives that are meaningful, fulfilling, and compassionate. And in doing so, we can make the world a better place, one life at a time.
