Keep Simple Stupid!
This week while giving a demo of our Jeevitam Platform to one of our prospective clients, a key observation made by the client was that the platform designed by us was very simple and could be used by vulnerable segments easily. In three simple steps, work seekers could register for livelihood opportunities and it could be done at Scale. Keep it simple, stupid (KISS) is a design principle that states that designs and/or systems should be as simple as possible. Wherever possible, complexity should be avoided in a system—as simplicity guarantees the greatest levels of user acceptance and interaction. In Uber, we can book a taxi in three simple steps, similarly in Airbnb we can book a property in three simple steps. However, under the hood of both these platforms, there is complex technology working but from a user experience perspective it's very simple and stupid to use. The ability to simplify and make it look stupid means to eliminate the unnecessary so that necessary may speak. It's Hard to Keep Things Simple Stupid.
“Simple can be harder than complex: You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it’s worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains.” ~ Steve Jobs. It is this fact that requires us to be simple and clear in order to engage better with people. Being simply stupid is probably one of the most effective strategies in the current world. But then it probably is not just about being simple and clear, but about being simple and clear to an extent that we “dumb down the user”. It means making the experience so fluid and intuitive that they do not have to put much effort into using our product/service or comprehending our message. The easier it is for a user to use our product and to get what they want out of it, the more chances we have that they will use that product/service again & again. We have to make sure that every aspect of our business and life is simple, elegant and clear, ’cause, in this world, complexity is the last thing we need.
Too many people over-complicate things in Life. This can lead to paralysis by analysis. I believe if we apply the Keep Simple Stupid principle to our life also, we will not only be more productive, but we will also feel better about the decisions we make and can have a happier Life. For example, Eat Food which is good for us, Exercise wherever whenever we can, it's simple, we complicate it by analysing it. Similarly in relationships, the more succinct and simplified we can make our communication with others, the less likelihood there is for something to be unsaid. I have experienced that mind games are a drag too many people play. Keeping it simple and stupid will help us drop the mind games, say what we mean and move on, this is what I believe and do. Keep it simple stupid is hardly rocket science. While this theory started in business, it has become something everyone can adopt somewhere in their life too. For a principle that speaks about simplicity, it’s also as simple as it gets. Stay Simple Stupid.
