Let Go & Grow: Abandoning What No Longer Works

Summary:
In both professional and personal lives, we often continue with approaches that no longer work. True progress comes not from persisting with failing strategies, but from having the wisdom to recognize when change is needed and the courage to embrace new paths, even when doing so feels uncomfortable.

Key Takeaways:
- Innovation requires recognizing when established approaches no longer serve their purpose and having the courage to abandon them
- Challenging the status quo and learning from setbacks can enable unprecedented scale and impact
- Personal growth comes from letting go of our ineffective patterns – whether in work habits, relationships, or emotional responses

This week I participated in two Train the Trainer sessions organized by the Food Safety Regulator for street vendors and Kirana store owners. As a Master Assessor, I appreciated the regulator's commitment to improving food safety standards and the opportunity to revive Jeevitam's relationship with them post-COVID. While their dedication was evident, I noticed many training approaches remained unchanged despite evolved market conditions and vendor needs. The methods, while once effective, now seemed outdated – continuing with strategies that no longer yield results rather than letting go and finding new paths. This contrast between commendable intent and outdated execution highlighted a challenge common in both regulatory environments and business: the reluctance to abandon familiar but ineffective approaches.

The resistance to change perfectly captures what I witnessed during these sessions. Despite vendors' unique challenges requiring innovative approaches, training methodologies remained largely unchanged. At Jeevitam, we've taken the opposite approach, challenging the status quo and achieving an unprecedented scale – training over half a million people in just two years. When our ambitious Blue Sky Projects don't succeed, we extract learnings and move forward rather than persisting with failing approaches. It's particularly frustrating to observe bureaucracy across established institutions – from government agencies to large corporations and established players – resisting change despite rapidly evolving environments. This institutional reluctance to let go of what's not working actively hinders progress that could benefit stakeholders, when simple innovations could dramatically increase impact and efficiency.

This experience prompted reflection on areas where I might be holding onto ineffective patterns personally. I've had to abandon working habits no longer effective in Jeevitam's new growth phase, bringing more focus and better results. I've learned to invest time in relationships that add value, rather than persisting with connections that weren't working despite efforts. Most challenging has been shifting from emotional reactivity to a controlled, calm approach in difficult situations. The comfort of familiar approaches can be seductive even when ineffective. Jeevitam flourished when we had courage to let go – abandoning traditional methodologies for our unique impact-focused approach. The most valuable insight isn't just recognizing when to change course, but understanding that abandoning failing approaches opens doors to growth otherwise inaccessible. Progress comes from the wisdom to let go and courage to find better paths.
